Stilt Sandpiper

I had to go out to Reifel today for a couple of things and decided I might as well go for a walk while I was there. It was fortunate I came prepared as a Stilt Sandpiper had been spotted in the west field. After taking care of my other business I made my way out there. On checking the groups of Dowitchers and Yellowlegs,

… it was not long before I found the Stilt Sandpiper. It was being quite cooperative coming in close to the dyke/trail.

Baird’s Sandpiper

With shorebirds actively moving through the area I figured it was time to start getting back out to Boundary Bay. The timing was not ideal for my walk this afternoon as the tide was way out and I would be gone well before the high tide. None the less, it was a pleasant walk along the beach checking the shore line and tidal pools. There was not much around,

… but there were a number of Baird’s Sandpipers stretched out along the high water mark. While there were a few flocks of Semipalmated Plovers active further out on the beach, they were fairly skittish and I could not get close to them at all.

Bees, Goldfinch & Dragonfly

It is that time of year again to start watching the thistle for American Goldfinch feeding on them. That was the goal this afternoon, but things don’t always go as planned. While I could hear them in the area, no Goldfinch were showing up on the stretch of thistle I was watching.

There were lots of Bumble Bees cooperating though.

Eventually an American Goldfinch did show up along with another Bumble Bee. While not quite what I was after, it does make for an interesting photo.

To finish things off was this Dragonfly eating a bee.
