Prairie Falcon

As you have probably heard me mention previously, patience and perseverance are required for bird photography. Since the sun has returned I have been making regular trips out to Brunswick Point with the hope of getting the Prairie Falcon in better light. It finally paid off this afternoon.

After waiting a little over an hour the Prairie Falcon flew into the trees by the dyke. The closest I have seen it to the trail yet with an unobstructed view to boot. At last, a half decent photo of a rare visitor to this area.

The sun made an appearance today and made for a pleasant afternoon to be out for a walk. It was back to Brunswick Point to see if I could get the Prairie Falcon in better light. While it did show up in the trees along the dyke, it was not in a good spot for photos. While spending time waiting and watching,

… another falcon showed up and caught my attention. This Peregrine Falcon was busy eating its prey.

The tree it landed in was close to the dyke,

… and after eating this Peregrine seemed quite content to just sit and digest awhile.

It was quite approachable at this point and allowed for some nice shots. Quality time like this with a Peregrine Falcon does not happen often.

Before the next deluge of rain and wind was set to arrive, I wanted to get back out to Brunswick Point. The target bird today, a Prairie Falcon that had been sighted a few days ago. A fairly rare visitor for this area with the last one I saw being in Boundary Bay back in December, 2007. On speaking to other birders on my arrival the bird had been spotted in a few different locations. I made my way along the dyke around the point to a stand of trees adjacent to a farm. The Prairie Falcon was coming and going from the cottonwoods here.

While it was great to see the bird, it was quite some distance off and the grey skies did not help. Hopefully it is still around when the sun makes an appearance again.
