Rainy Day Heron

After finishing some errands in the morning, it was still fairly gloomy and drizzly this afternoon. Needing some exercise and fresh air, I headed out in spite of the weather. Needless to say the parking was near empty when I arrived at Reifel. At least here there would be some protection from the weather on the trails should it take a turn for the worse.

It was fairly quiet on the birding front as well. A good looking Peregrine was perched above the east dyke trail. Other birds of prey included Eagles, Red-tailed Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk and Northern Harriers. There were lots of sparrows flitting about along with a few Kinglets, Downy Woodpecker and Brown Creepers. No sign of the Common Redpoll that were seen in the last day or two. Unfortunately conditions were such that none provided any real good photo opportunities.

The only bird that did stay put and pose for me in the drizzle,

Great Blue Heron

… was this Great Blue Heron. Like the rest of us, I’m sure it was just waiting for the rain to come to an end.

Mallard & Great Blue Heron

After some chores around home it did clear up this afternoon, so brief stroll around Reifel was in order. It was fairly quiet both people and birding wise. While watching waterfowl on some of the inner ponds,

… I managed to capture this Mallard taking off. Then along one of the inner trails,

… this Great Blue Heron was resting on the waters edge in some nice light. As both Mallards and Great Blue Herons are abundant in this area,

… it was not surprising that a few Mallards tried to sneak into the shot as well.

Heron, Woodpecker & Hornets

Managed a couple of walks today, but not much to show for it. This morning started off with a Great Blue Heron.

It was roosting in a conifer with its feathers all ruffled up.

Downy Woodpecker

This juvenile Downy Woodpecker was the only other photo from the morning. On the shore bird front I did see some Western & Semipalmated Sandpipers, Dunlin, Killdeer, Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs and Dowitchers. None, however, were in decent locations for pictures.

Being such a nice day, I headed out again for a short walk early this evening. Still looking for song birds with the late day sun, it was pretty quiet again with no takers wanting to pose for the camera.

This White-faced Hornet nest was the only photo from this evening.
