Savannah, Swallow & Chickadee

While it was a fairly quiet afternoon on my walk there were still a couple of thing going on. One particular tree had a couple of Savannah Sparrows coming and going.

Busy foraging amongst the branches with this one catching a small insect of some sort,

Followed by a nice contented pose afterwards.

Still no young visible yet outside the Tree Swallow nest. While watching them,

… a Black-capped Chickadee was also making regular food deliveries to its nest.

Cooper’s Hawk Nest

While I will come across Cooper’s Hawks in many different locales around here, there is one spot I am familiar with that has a nesting pair. I have observed them off and on at a distance for some time now. Cooper’s Hawks can be very defensive of their nesting area and you have to respect that and any nesting birds for that matter. This particular nest,

… as you can see is not in a good spot for photographing, but I did take this record shot. So while photos are out of the picture, it is still fun to check on once in a while. On heading out to this area again today it looked like the female was feeding young. I stopped briefly,

… and managed this shot. This is a 100% crop given the nest is tucked away well inside the tree. A nice glimpse at a new arrival and then it was time to move on.

Osprey & Spotted Sandpiper

Went to check on the Osprey nest again today, but still no sign of chicks. It should not be long now though. The male was making the usual fish deliveries for the female and she returned with another stick for the nest. At one point she started calling,

… and he returned to the nest.

Then he started preening or moving her feathers around. A behaviour I have not observed previously while watching them.

Bonus bird of the day,

… was this Spotted Sandpiper that showed up along the river bank. Made me wonder if it might be nesting somewhere nearby.
