Well the local birding community is abuzz with a bird fist spotted Sunday in Queens Park, New Westminster. While initially stumped as to the identity of the bird, the finder did take good field notes which led to a probable ID followed by confirmation yesterday. A mega rarity and first Canadian record for the Red-flanked Bluetail. Not having to work today, I made my way out there this morning.
It was not long after arriving I got my first look and photo. This little flycatcher should be on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, but has some how managed to make its way here to British Columbia.
Needless to say, there were lots of birders and photographers around. Even one of the local TV stations were present and covered the story.
This was a life list addition for me and no doubt for most of the others present. Hopefully the weather will improve towards the end of the week so I can try for some better shots and another look.
