Great Horned Owl

This afternoon’s walk took me to Deas Island Park. The highlight of the day were two Great Horned Owl juveniles.

While they were some distance away,

… and the light a little challenging, it was still fun watching them. As you can see they were also curious and watching me. They were still pretty downy and probably have not been away from the nest long. One of the adults was atop a nearby tree.

Wood Duck + Cackling Goose

This afternoon at Reifel the Wood Ducks seemed particularly busy. While you would think it would be getting close to the time to see some ducklings,

… they were active in the branches. This pair was in close proximity to a nesting box while providing this nice interaction.

Then this male Wood Duck also struck a nice pose while in the trees.

Odd man out today,

Cackling Goose

… was this lone Cackling Goose on the trail by the centre display ponds.

On the way home along Westham Island Road,

… I stopped briefly for this Brewer’s Blackbird. This is a fairly reliable location to see them.

Rufous Hummingbird Nest

A nice afternoon and good crowd at Reifel when I showed up to help out on the trails this afternoon.

The highlight today was a Rufous Hummingbird nest along the centre dyke trail. It was on an evergreen branch overhanging the slough visible from the lower inside trail. Another volunteer and myself spent the whole afternoon there with a scope and camera set up. With two young in the nest being fed, it was the source of much entertainment.

This video actually turned out better than any of my still shots.
