Pig & Corn Roast

The 23rd Annual Pig & Corn Roast was held this evening at the Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. This fund raiser is held in early September each year.

Cannot have a pig roast without a pig. This is one of two that were prepared for this evening’s event.

The turn out was pretty good this year and the weather was ideal.

After dinner the evening starts to wind down with a raffle. Once again a good time was had by all. We actually came away with a couple of prizes!

Hairy Woodpecker

Managed a brief walk at Reifel this morning. Not too much going on with shore birds as the tide was wrong. There were a couple of Red-necked Phalaropes though with a handful of the regulars.

While watching song bird activity in some trees with another visitor along the east dyke trail I heard what I thought was a Downy Woodpecker.

The other birder pointed it out for me and it was actually a Hairy Woodpecker.

It has been a while since I have seen one and was the highlight of the morning.

Pectoral Sandpipers

This afternoon it was back out to Boundary Bay. On heading out along the dyke I was noticing mostly Pectoral, Baird’s and Least Sandpipers around the tidal pools. There were some Semiplamated Plovers further out. I continued out to 96 St. and then made my way down to the beach. There was not much around between here and the old pilings. As there seemed to be lots of Pectoral Sandpipers today, I continued back to where I had seen them. On relocating one nice sized group I decided to focus on them.

They seemed a little uneasy on my approach.

So I dropped down and proceeded on my knees and they settled back into their routine.

Before you know it, they were striking nice poses for me.

While some relaxed and rested amongst the seaweed,

… others continued foraging for food.

After probing the ground this one came up draped in seaweed.

As you can see they were quite comfortable with my being there now. Some even wandering in too close for photos. That is when you just sit back and enjoy.
