A Semipalmated Day

It was back out to Boundary Bay this afternoon. Timing was better this time as I would be there for the rising tide. While walking west from 104 Street along the beach I encountered some Baird’s Sandpipers again in the same area as last week. Then things started to pick up with lots of the smaller peeps around. On checking the mixed groups closely,

… there were a few Semipalmated Sandpipers present. Also different from my last visit,

… the Semipalmated Plovers were a little more cooperative this afternoon. Finishing off this photo session of the little guys,

… was some Least Sandpipers. In addition to these peeps there were several Western Sandpiper present and then on my way back with the tide almost all the way in, a few Pectoral Sandpipers showed up as well.

With shorebirds actively moving through the area I figured it was time to start getting back out to Boundary Bay. The timing was not ideal for my walk this afternoon as the tide was way out and I would be gone well before the high tide. None the less, it was a pleasant walk along the beach checking the shore line and tidal pools. There was not much around,

… but there were a number of Baird’s Sandpipers stretched out along the high water mark. While there were a few flocks of Semipalmated Plovers active further out on the beach, they were fairly skittish and I could not get close to them at all.

Mountain Bluebird

Another early spring event I look forward to is the Mountain Bluebird. Each year at this time during their migration they can usually be seen in Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen. Having already been sighted elsewhere in the Lower Mainland recently, I made my way down there this afternoon.

Only a few minutes after arriving I spotted my target bird.

There were two male Mountain Bluebirds actively hunting for insects along the beach.

While numbers will vary each year, these were the only two I saw today. Still, not bad for the first try of this year for these beauties.
