Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reifelbirdsanctuary.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reifel<\/a>. While heading out along the east dyke trail I caught a glimpse of a Varied Thrush. It was with some Robins feeding on berries. I headed out to Brunswick Point, located at the western end of River Rd. in Ladner. As it was still fairly windy, it was pretty quiet here birding wise as well. On the way back my luck changed. I noticed the distinct shape and colour of a regular winter visitor alight atop a small tree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1541\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1541\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1541\" title=\"Northern Shrike\" src=\"http:\/\/crazym.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NSHR028.jpg\" alt=\"Northern Shrike\" width=\"398\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crazym.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NSHR028.jpg 398w, https:\/\/crazym.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NSHR028-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/crazym.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/NSHR028-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 85vw, 398px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northern Shrike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Northern Shrike will normally scan for prey from a high perch like this. They are a predatory song bird that will eat insects, snakes, rodents and small birds. Sometimes referred to as the &#8220;Butcher Bird&#8221;, it will impale its prey on thorns or branches. This helps support the prey while it is eaten, a means to cache food for later and a way they mark their territory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I started off the morning at Reifel.
