Merganser, Cormorant, Owls, Harrier & Merlin

It has been about two weeks since I last posted anything from Brunswick Point and Canoe Pass. On that walk there were some interesting sea ducks around, just not great light. This afternoon in Canoe Pass the light was better,

… and a Red-breasted Merganser was still around. There were also some Loons and Grebes, but they were too far off for any pictures. To make up for that,

… one of the several Double-crested Cormorant was more than happy to oblige.

On my walk around Brunswick Point there were still at least half a dozen Snowy Owls present again. Unlike last time they were all further out in the marsh this afternoon. What was active and in a little closer today,

… were the Short-eared Owls. After getting this one taking a time out on the log,

As owls hunt with their ears as well as their eyes,

Accompanying the owls over the marsh were the usual Northern Harriers.

As the sun was going down behind some fairly dark clouds I was making my way back to the car when I noticed some sparrows scattering into the brambles. Right behind them flying low to the ground and then up into a tree was my bonus bird of the day.

Merlin

This Merlin was unsuccessful in catching anything and with the awful light I was not sure if I was going to get a usable shot. This one did take a little massaging in post processing, and was a nice finish to the afternoon.

Well things did not go quite as planned today. The beautiful day it was, I had hoped to get out earlier. Unfortunately I only managed a brief walk out in Boundary Bay just before the sun went down.

There were the usual Northern Harriers up and hunting. Use to seeing them roosting on logs or down in the marsh when they stop to rest,

There were some Short-eared Owls cruising the area along with several Snow Owls roosting. There were still lots of photographers going after the owls so I did not bother to head out.

On my way back I did manage this shot of a Northern Harrier making a pass at a Snowy Owl roosting on an old stump. The Snowy ended up there after being flushed off another log by a photographer. They just can’t seem to get a break some days.

A Blue Day

I started off this morning at Reifel. Lots of Barn, Tree and Violet-green Swallows hawking for insects. Heard my first Common Yellowthroat of the season for the sanctuary, but no photos. With nesting season well underway for some waterfowl, so are the turf wars.

I love the posturing of the Canada Goose when protecting its territory.

The geese have started nesting,

After Reifel I headed down to Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen to check for the Mountain Bluebird again. I got encouraging news while walking out along the dyke from another birder indicating six Bluebirds had been seen.

It took a few minutes, but I located them foraging along beach.

They would perch nicely at times on the tops of the thistles.

They moved about quite a bit and did spend time in the trees as well. I counted eight Mountain Bluebirds while I was there. Finally some blue in my day. Hopefully they stick around for a while so I can spend some more time with them. Then there was this,
